NAAV DURGHATNA (THE BOAT ACCIDENT)

The story of this classic revolves around Ramesh who lives in Calcutta and is a lawyer. Ramesh is in love with Hemnalini
who belongs to an upper middle class family. There feelings towards each other are not hidden from anybody. Ramesh is often called for breakfast at Hemnalini’s house where her father is always ready to give homeopathic medicines to anyone talking about illness. Hemnalini’s father wants his daughter and Ramesh to marry soon. There is often another guest at their breakfast table(friend of Hemnalini’s brother) who also wants to marry Hemnalini. Ultimately Ramesh gives his consent for marriage. But he has to go to his village when he is informed of his father’s illness. There, he comes to know that his father is not ill but he is called because his marriage has been fixed with the daughter of his father’s friend. Due to the pressure of hisn family, Ramesh has to get married with the girl of his father’s choice. After marrige while returning with his bride and relatives to his village due  to a stoarm the boat on which the marariage party is riding drowns. When Ramesh comes into his senses he finds himself on the shore. He also finds the bride at some distance. Ramesh finds the unconscious girl extremely beautiful and innocent. He thinks that perhapes this was the will of God and he should now spend his life with his wife. He also comes to know that his father and relatives died in the accident. One night when he calls his wife by her name Sushila, she says, why do you call me Sushia, I am Kamla. During further conversation, Ramesh realizes that this is not his wife. Perhapes some other marriage party also met with boat accident the same day and accidently he found and brought home the other bride. Kamla does not know much about her husband. When Ramesh returns to Calcutta, he sends  Kamla to a boarding for studies. His relationship with Hemnalini again stats growing up. When Kamla comes home in vacations, she tries to come near to Ramesh ignorant of every thing but Ramesh always maintains a distance. One day, Hemnalini,s brother comes to Ramesh’s home on complaint by his friend(Hemnalini’s admirer) and finds Ramesh with Kamla. He accuses Ramesh of cheating and asks him to forget his sister. Broken heart Ramesh decides to leave Calcutta and boards a ship with Kamla. On the ship also, Kamla tries to please Ramesh and come closer to him but in vain. Ramesh settles in a small town and writes a letter to Hemnalini informing her everything. But before he could post the letter, he has to go to Calcutta for some work. In Calcutta, he finds that Hemnalini’s brother and father are outstation with some doctor whom they want her to marry. Here, Kamla finds the letter Ramesh has written. She leaves her home and is given shelter by an old rich lady. After some time, she comes to know that the old lady is her husband Nalinaksh’s mother whose marriage is now being fixed with some girl from Calcutta (who is none other than Hemnalini). Soon Hemnalini arrives at Nalinaksh home. But Nalinaksh mother has now grown attachment with innocent Kamla and wants her to win over Hemnalini. When Hemnalini is about to take a decision on marriage Ramesh arrives with her brother who now knows everything. Ramesh who is still searching Kamla comes to know that Kamla is in her husband Nalinaksh’s home only. Free of Kamla’s responsibility and of the complex situation, fate brought him in, Ramesh is now ready to marry Hemnalini wholeheartedly. On the other side, when Kamla is cleaning and decorating Nalinaksh’s room with special efforts, Nalinaksh enters his room. When Kamla touches his feets, he recognizes his wife and embraces her into his life.
