Tales from Shakespeare is a prose summary of 20
plays by Shakespeare, first published in 1807. It was prepared by Charles Lamb and his sister Mary, who is responsible for 14 of the plays in the book.
Charles and
mary Lamb did wonderful characterizations of the Bard's plays into beautiful narratives, with Charles doing the great tragedies, and Mary, on her fascinating version of the comedies.
It was pointed out in their
introduction that their works rely on the language of the original plays for the tragedies, and for the comedies, a more freely adaptation. The work was 'submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare.' Indeed, it succeeded in becoming a classic for generations.
