This novel, tell us about the German nationalism, fifteen years before Adolph Hitler reached the power. It began describing an old teacher giving lessons to his students. They were very young and they were happy to stay at the school. The noise coming from the street interrupted the class and the old teacher showed them the soldiers marching to the front. The teacher immediately, made a speech, pushing the students join the army. The old man talked them about the patriotism and their duty to fight for the mother country. The young boys left the building and went to the Army office for their enrollment. They were sent to the barrack to be instructed and familiarize with the use of the gun and how to kill the enemy. They were dreamers but they soon realized that the dreams had become in a nightmare. They spent the day jumping and running into the barrack. The sergeant instructor applied a severe discipline, and treated the young’s soldiers as if they were rubbish. They began to hate the fat man and decided to give him a good lesson. The man used to drink at the tavern every night. Once, the boys waited for him at the street. The fat man left the tavern completely drunk. He was walking when one of soldiers, covered the head of the instructor. The three young companions began to punch him, and hit him with a hard stick on his ass. They enjoyed a lot hitting the man. The sergeant could not accuse them because he had no evidence to blame the soldiers. Finally, they were moved to the front. The new sergeant was a good man and took care from the young soldiers. He taught them all the necessary to keep them alive. The new soldiers soon realized that the things into the front were quite different from the instruction that they have received in the barrack. The food was scarce and they eat a meagre ration every day. Some bombs exploded into the trench, leaving behind it a lot of wounded and dead men. The shrapnel was permanently. Once, they had to fight and kill the enemy using their bayonet, into the trench. Every day a lot of soldiers felt down injured or dead, and they were taken out the trench to be moved to the hospital or the cemetery. .The initial group of young soldiers were reduced day after day. Tjaden, Müller, Katczinsky, Albert, Haie are only names. They felt down defending the native land. Paul will remember them with love and pain. Pablo was injured out the trench and his sergeant charged him, running under fire.
He was sent to the hospital, where the doctor and nurses took care of him. After all, he had save his life, thank to his sergeant. Once cured, he was given some days of vacations and he came back home to visit their parents. He was pleasant and happy to see your mother and father again. They days went by very fast and he had to return to the front. This time he went back as an experienced soldier. But, he knew that it was nothing. The bullet did not recognize between the beginner and the experienced soldier. He was right about his thought. One day the lieutenant called the sergeant and ordered him to get out the trench to spy the enemy. Pablo and the sergeant were walking together when they were discovered. The heavy fire began immediately and the sergeant was injured. Pablo did not think much and charged his superior on his shoulder. The man begged the soldier that he must save his life. But Pablo, run under the heavy fire in the same way that the sergeant have made it, for him. He reached the line alive and put the injured body on the land. He talked the man but there was no response. There was no blood in the place. He turned on the body of the man to discover that the sergeant had been reached for a bullet in his back. The old sergeant had passed away. In the year of 1918, the offensives and bombardments were decreasing. The soldiers spent the day into the trench doing nothing. It happened that allied and German Generals were negotiating an honourable rendition. It would mean the end of the war. One of these days Pablo was into the trench on guard. Only by chance, he saw a beautiful butterfly and he did not could resist the temptation to take it. He only, took his arms and his face out of the trench and it was enough. The enemy fired him and the bullet reached his forehead. He dies in a second. The military dispatch related to this day did not mention the dead of Pablo.
