The Pirate is a novel by Sir Walter Scott.

The story is set in 17th century Shetland. The amiable and attractive Mordaunt, son of the misantahropic Basil Mertoun, is a close friend of Minna and Brenda, daughters of his father''s landlord, the wealthy Magnus Troil. A buccaneer, Cleveland, is wrecked on the coast.  Mordaunt rescues him.

Somehow, Mordaunt and Cleveland develop a hatred for each other. Minna falls in love with Cleveland. As relationships evolve between the characters, Mordaunt finds himself unwelcome at his landlord''s house. Brenda, however, remains true to their friendship, and for this, he grows to love her.

The pirates and Cleveland eventually attempt to capture Magnus and his daughters, but Mordaunt raises the security alarm and they are rescued by the frigate. As the plot unfolds, it turns out that Cleveland is half-brother of Mordaunt. Cleveland is parted from Minna. The story ends happily for Mordaunt and Brenda.
