Theodor Fontane: Grete Minde
Theodor Fontane (1819 - 1898) tells the story of Grete Minde based on some historic resources. Grete Minde is growing up in Tangermünde with her father, her half-brother and his wife. She is treated badly. After the death of her
father Grete goes away with Valtin, whom it didn''t go well at home as well. Grete, Valtin and their
child are three years later members of a puppet show group. Valtin dies. Grete with her kind travels back to her
brother in order to ask for her heritage. She is turned down. In her evergrowing frenzy, she abducts her
nephew and sets the city on fire. She climbs with her child and her nephew on the tower of the Church of st. Stephan with which she tumbles down in flames.
