King Basilio of Poland become fond of to the astrology, consults to the stars on the future of his Segismundo son, who finishes being born. The stars predict the destiny of the prince and affirm that he will be I generate of destruction, he will divide to the country and he will press his town.

In order to avoid that this is fulfilled, Basilio decides to hide and to lock up to its son in a tower similar to a jail, put grates on and located between valleys, moved away of the civilization, so that nobody discovers its existence. Segismundo suffers and it is lamented to be private of its freedom. It grows prisoner and ignorante of its condition of heir of throne, only one called person Clotaldo can speak with him.

A day king Basilio, doubtful of the veracity of the stars, orders to Clotaldo that takes to its Segismundo son to the palace, giving him before one pócima to sleep, so that, in case the king decided to give back it to the tower by the dangerous behavior of his son, this one thought that everything only had been a dream.

Then it orders to transfer to palace to Segismundo. The prince who was been as much locked up time reacts in violent form, confused and disturbed, he behaves as the stars had predestined it: it offends, it runs over and it kills. Due to this Basilio decides to return to lock up to its son due to its terrible reaction, being confirmed the terrible and feared truth of that future one. Clotaldo comments to him to Segismundo that there is to always make the good, since this life is as a dream and what matters is the successor, the eternal one. Wide-awake Segismundo again in the tower. It is at this moment when Segismundo realizes reason that had Clotaldo and begins its philosophical reflection. Here it appears the monólogo of Segismundo, which culminates with the famous phrase “that all the life is dream and the dreams, dreams are”.

Miserable Ay of me,
and ay, poor devil!
To worry, skies, I try,
since you treat to me thus
what crime I committed
against you being born…

although if I were born, I already understand
what crime I have committed.
Enough cause has had
your justice and rigor;

then the greater crime
of the man it is to have been born.

It only wanted to know
in order to worry my sleeplessness
(leaving one it starts off, skies,
the crime to be born),
what I could more offend to you
in order to punish to me more.

Was not born the others?
Then if the others were born,
what privileges had
what I never enjoyed?

While as much the town finds out that Segismundo exists and is the legitimate heir of the throne. The town, supported by the soldiers decides to rescue to him and they release it. Segismundo is limited to think that everything is a dream. A great one begins then it battles, against his own father. The prophecy had been fulfilled: the town divided itself and the war was reason for destruction and death.

When it returns to the cut to occupy its throne, one behaves like a prudent and justiciero governor. This way it is overcome the destiny and the triumph of the freedom is proclaimed. The work finishes with the transformation of Segismundo, which has reached the conclusion that, it is a dream or a reality, always is necessary to make the good.

The work is developed with an intensity of surprising thought. They are pronounced subjects power stations like pride and humility, the injustice, the free will, the predestination, the honor and the deshonor, the honesty, the deception, the brevity of the life, the education and the individual freedom.

Like reflection of the Baroque one, “The life is a dream” begins with the rupture of the lost harmony. The work becomes a symbol of the human life, when verifying that in this life everything is a dream and what matters is not this life, but the successor, the eternal one.
