Emma Rouault, daughter of a Norman farmer, has a romantic soul perpetually unsatisfied. To escape the wildness of its existence Bobary marries Charles, a rural doctor .. A budding romance with Leon, a notary clerk, is frustrated by the departure of this. Emma is delivered with a passion for reading novels.
