To Kill a mockingbird (Tom’s Story)
A black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a girl name Mayah. She was a poor white woman, the caretaker of her family. She had accused Tom Robinson of raping her, she bared bruises all over her face as proof. A good man named Atticus took his case, many were furious about his decision because he was white, and racially equality wasn’t a thing back then. He was mocked and treated differently, as was his family. His children Jem and Scout reacted badly to all the bad attention, and fought back. Forcing Atticus to punish them.
Jem had to read to a widowed old lady every day, until one day when she died. He had broken her addiction to morphine, due to the bond they shared; this gave the family renewed faith. Atticus begun to fear for tom’s safety, so on the night before the trial, stood guard at his jail cell. His children came to back him up, and when Atticus didn’t move aside for a angry mob ready for violence. His daughter scout came up front and spoke to these men. They were fathers themselves, and were taken aback by her innocence. They backed off that night.
The day of the trial had come, everyone was all nerves. The children had snuck into the court and went to sit with Tom’s supporters. Jem was sure that they would win once Atticus started his case,
Tom’s story was that Mayah, had called him in to help her with a broken door, it wasn’t broken. So she asked him to fix something on the roof, he climbed a ladder. Mayah then pulled him down and started kissing him. Her father came in and freaked out, calling her a slut, and started beating her. Tom ran away in fear of being prosecuted. Not because he was guilty but because he was afraid of being called guilty. Atticus’s verdict was that Tom could not be guilty, because he was in a accident when he was younger and couldn’t use his right arm. Therfore couldn’t rape this little girl. The judge made Tom admit that he would have enough power in one arm to rape the girl.
Atticus said that because there was not proof that this girl had been raped there was no evidence to hold Tom in trial. No doctor had come to see this girl and prove her story. The Judge swayed this and called for a recess. Atticus then found out that his kids were hiding away watching the trial, he sent them home, but allowed them to come back for the final verdict.
They lost the trial. Jem was very upset because he knew they should have won, but because the man was black , he had lost. And been sent to life in jail. All of the black supporters waited in the court until Atticus left, they all stood and applauded him. Mayah’s father was furious; he publicly announced that he would get revenge because he had been humiliated.
When Atticus got home, he had to share the dreadful news that Tom had tried to escape and was killed in the process. He went to tom’s family and told them the news, he told them how sorry he was because, had Tom been prosecuted in a higher court, he would have won. So the poor man never had a chance. They thanked him for his help.
One day the children were on there way home from trick or treating for Halloween. And Mayah’s father came up to them and tried to kill them with a kitchen blade. They were saved by a friend named Boo. In the process of saving them, he killed the man. The sheriff told everyone that he had fallen on the knife, to protect the children and Boo from having to go to trial.
The moral in this part of the story ia about racial equality. It has not been fair, white and black people couldn’t be on tv together, they couldn’t swim or ride the bus together. The white people always got the privallages, Black and White people stood up for their whites, many dying in the process. But what we have nowadays was worth it. We are all equal, just the way it should be. This story was about a black man being triad for something he didn’t do, and still being called guilty. Because you can’t trust the word of a black man. A white man stood up for him. It shows that people are good at heart.
