A Midsummer Night’s Dream
In this play we see a dream upon the stage,
flesh
and blood actors transformed into fairies and the English countryside
as the realm of supernatural beings and humans together. All are
subject to the influence of magic, of spells and magic herbs, whether
Fairy Queen or peasant.
This play is still a favourite at school drama
presentations and in professional theatres alike, thought to be a
masterpiece . The plot is slightly farcical, the characters are extreme
types in many ways, but all resound through the language , the
sense of setting and drama that imbue it. Even the lightest
moments have a tang of tragedy, as the sorrow and heartache have an
undercurrent of mirth and joy. The whole play is filled with
poetry, a vehicle for the poet’s fancy and fantasy, so that we truly
can suspend our disbelief and enjoy. Oberon and Titania, Puck and
Bottom are archetypes that echo in the works of subsequent
authors, poets ,and musicians and in the hearts of every person
who once played the part of a tree, fairy, or Duke in their
school presentation of this work.
Here we see the story of an amateur play about
the love of Pyramus and Thisbe, to be performed at the
wedding of Duke
Theseus to Hippolyta, the warrior Queen of the Amazons; the players
rehearse in the forest and become
entangled with the attempts of Puck
to rectify the love lives of the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and
Titania, and to straighten out the amours of Lysander,
Helena,Hermia and Demetrius, who are , like the fairies , amorously
entangled. Eventually all the lovers are sorted out satisfactorially
and a triple wedding ensues among the humans, where the play by Bottom
and friends is well received. The fairies are similarly reconciled
and the whole realm blessed as true love rules.
