The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel

Book Review by: Nefhiriel

Original Author: Baroness Orczy
A collection of short stories about the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men.
Sir
Percy is a master of disguise, transforming
himself from an English
gentleman, to an old woman, to a seedy servant, to a soldier of the
Republic—frustrating loyal citizens in whatever persona he chooses.
Chauvelin is one of the few men who can see through his disguises, but
even he doesn’t usually recognize him in time. He’s followed a step
behind the reckless adventurer, being driven mad by him, and blamed for
every time he “lets” him escape. But Chauvelin isn’t the only one
mocked by the daring of Sir Percival Blakeney.
Aristocrat
after aristocrat is whisked away to safety, right under the noses of
armed guards and watchful citizens. They learn their lesson, and the
full extent of the cleverness of their opponent, but only after it’s
too late. Half of France is convinced he’s the devil incarnate; in
England he’s the nation’s most romanticized hero.
To Sir Percy and his
League, it’s all done simply for “sport” and adventure. However,
as ingenious as Percy is, mere “sport” of the variety he enjoys is
dangerous. One slip could mean the loss of his life, his men’s, and of
the very people he is trying to rescue. Each time he carries out
another of his plans, the risk continues, and the price on his head is
raised. Plans, and revisions of plans, must be formulated on the spot,
as he deals with enemies without, and treachery within.
Titles of stories included in this book: Sir
Percy Explains; A Question of Passports; Two Good Patriots; The Old
Scarecrow; A Find Bit of Work; How Jean-Pierre Met the Scarlet
Pimpernel; Out of the Jaws of Death; The Traitor; The Caberet de la
Liberté; "Needs Must-"; and A Battle of Wits.
