(1845)
The Count of Monte Cristo , one of the most popular romances of the fertile Dumas pere , is also the only one of his stories to be placed in modern times. Edmond Dantes, a young sailor unjustly accused of helping the exiled Napoleon in 1815, has been arrested and imprisoned in the Chateau d''If, near Marseille. After fifteen years, he finally escapes by taking the place of his dead companion, the Abbe Faria; enclosed in a
sack, he is thrown into the sea. He cuts the sack with his knife, swims to safety, is taken to Italy on a fisherman''s boat. From Genoa, he goes to the cavern of Monte Cristo and digs up the fabulous treasures of which the dying Faria had told. He then uses the money to punish his enemies and reward his friends.
