Polly and the Pirates

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: Ted Naifeh
A graphic novel about the adventures of Polly, daughter of the legendary Pirate Queen, and her high seas quest to find her
mother’s buried treasure - before the Pirate King finds it first!
A Midnight Kidnapping
Polly Ann Pringle leads a rather dull life at Miss Lovejoy’s Preparatory School for Proper Young Ladies…until a band of pirates kidnaps her in the middle of the night (bed and all)! The pirates, led by Shamus “ Scrimshaw” MacGillicuddy, believe that sweet little innocent Polly is really the long lost daughter of their former captain, Meg Malloy, the infamous Pirate Queen. Scrimshaw wants Polly to help the pirates find the treasure her mother buried before she disappeared 13 years ago. A simple request, except that Scrimshaw has lost the treasure map!
In Search of Buried Treasure
Polly thinks the whole idea is ridiculous and jumps overboard – into shark-infested waters. During her daring escape, she meets Claudio, a handsome young sea captain. Claudio claims her mother stole the treasure from his father, the Pirate King, and the treasure actually belongs to him. He blackmails Polly into helping him recover the missing treasure map. But Claudio and the other greedy pirates underestimate prep school Polly, who turns out to be brave and resourceful and surprisingly skillful with a sword.
“Where on earth did you learn to fight like this?” asks Claudio.
“Last month my class did a production of ‘The Three Musketeers,” Polly replies. “I played D’Artagnan.”

This graphic novel is filled with doublecrosses, ambushes, and some rather “salty” dialogue (“Heave! Curse ya, yer bilge-sippin’, shoe-eatin…’”). Author Ted Naifeh builds the suspense right up to the final battle on the briny high seas, where Polly’s discovers the surprising truth behind her mother, the Pirate Queen’s, treasure.
