H. G. Wells' the Invisible Man: The Graphic Novel

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Authors: H. G. Wells; Terry Davis
This retelling of The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells takes the original science fiction thriller to another level by
using a graphic novel format. Now readers can visually experience the spine-chilling suspense of this timeless masterpiece through its dark, gothic images.

In the middle of the night a mysterious stranger with a disturbing secret creeps into Iping, a tiny English village. “The poor soul,” thinks Mrs. Hall, the innkeeper. “He’s covered in bandages. He must have had a terrible accident or an operation.”

But when the money box from the town vicar and other items suddenly start disappearing, the villagers begin to suspect this strange, brooding stranger. An angry mob led by the sheriff tries to arrest him, but they discover can’t get a hold of him – he’s invisible!

“I’ll show you all what’s fake and what’s real!” cries the Invisible Man, stripping his outer clothing to reveal…nothing. Evading the hysterical mob proves easy that night. But as he slips into madness, the Invisible Man makes too mistakes that ultimately cost him his freedom.

This book is part of a fascinating series by Stone Arch Books that takes classic novels and puts them in graphic novel format to appeal to a young, modern audience (see list below). According to the book publishers, all of their Classic Fiction Graphic Novels are safe, containing no violence and no inappropriate subjects. With Discussion Questions, Writing Prompts, and a Glossary, they make good educational tools for reluctant readers who may be less likely to read the classics in their original length.
