ABSTRACT Chick Dixon & Carlos Meglia. SUPERMAN TARZAN – SONS OF THE
JUNGLE –DC 2002. Preposterous, almost pointless reworking of the Superman and Tarzan origin stories, badly drawn, scripted and presented as an alternative history. As mutineers attempt to abandon the heavily Pregnant Mrs Greystoke on a dark Jungle peninsular, a meteor falls from the sky, and the mutiny is thwarted. The Greystokes get to go home safely to London, taking their
infant, John – Tarzan – Greystoke away with them. In the jungle, the
apes find not the infant Greystoke, but the last son of Krypton. The apes raise him until he becomes the man of steel. He is as thick as two short planks compared to the apes that talk and understand geography and geology. When humans are seen, Superman thinks they are his Kryptonian ancestors, and frightens them off, until he saves a child from a crocodile. He paints a red S on his otherwise bare chest and eventually finds a Fortress Of Solitude in the Jungle that tells him who he really is. Meanwhile, Lord Greystoke laments his life in the real World and mounts an expedition by
zeppelin to the Jungle. His passengers include Jane Parker, and a reporter called Lois Lane. (Yep, that one). Superman is becoming an invincible force in the jungle, even punching out a rogue elephant in one of the few great moments in the hackneyed storey. Much to the distress of a jungle tribal princess. Fortunately, a weird green rock (
kryptonite) weakens Superman and she is able to capture him. She also shoots down the zeppelin, and captures the other characters. It is Greystoke who rescues everyone by removing the Kryptonite; enabling Superman to do whether does best. Greystoke now decides to
stay in the Jungle to take Superman’s place, while Superman heads off for civilisation. The r ladies of course, stay with their respective heroes, as they would be expected to do. This one is a waste of comic space and looks like a bad joke without a punch line.
