Lost Girl

Book Review by: cort

Original Author: Nabiel Kanan
This stand-alone graphic novel gently tells Beth’s coming of age story. Beth is a British teenager with a good-girl reputation
on a sightseeing vacation with her family and their friends.
When her parents get lost and stop at a diner for directions, Beth runs to a convenience store to buy mare batteries for her Walkman. This is where she first sees the nameless girl who will change her life forever, sitting on the trunk of a car and smoking a cigarette. While Beth is waiting in line to purchase the batteries, the girl gives a man a note asking him to meet her in the alley. Beth follows. The girl has sex with the man right there, and then steals his car. Later, Beth sees the car smashed into a tree.
Not knowing why, Beth is strangely drawn to this girl. When her parents leave in the morning to go sightseeing, Caitlin comes over to hide her marijuana under Beth’s mattress. Beth is so good, no one would ever suspect her of doing anything like smoking pot. Beth plans to go to the beach with Caitlin, but she sees the mystery girl from the night before and decides to follow her again. She goes into a mysterious cabin in the woods, and Beth comes back to see Caitlin.
The next day at the beach, a good-looking guy invites Beth and Caitlin to a barbeque. Beth is determined to be seductive, and wears a very small dress. Paul invites her back to his place, and she goes. She tells Caitlin later that nothing happened because Paul was weird, but we really know nothing happened because Beth can’t stop thing about the strange girl.
Beth is drawing in the woods when the girl sneaks up and kills a snake very close to Beth. The girl takes Beth to a beautiful field full of flowers, and Beth finds out she stole the marijuana from her room. The mystery girl refuses to tell Beth where she lives or her name, but they meet again the next day. They spend the afternoon listening to music and smoking pot, and then the girl steals a horse for them to ride thought the woods.
Before Beth leaves, she searches for the girl. No one has any idea who she is. She meets Beth later on the beach, but instead of saying good-bye, she tells Beth to close her eyes. She is gone when Beth opens them again. She returns home with dreams about seeing the girl again some day.
