James Lee Burke obviously knows his country well. You, too, can get to see the myriad of characters in Lousiana and Florida in this. The hard - burned, plantation style society. His criminals fill all the norms of today's reader. Cruel, perverted, sex - oriented and violent people who take advantage of young and beautifull women for money and pleasure. They all play out their personas in this action - ridden, fast - paced novel of crime in Louisiana. His protagonist could have been the author himself, at least as far as the human liabilities go. Any thriller fan would like this novel. Once you can stomach the perversions of humanity and the cruelty of men to women you'll be at home. Not a book for the genteel reader. A novel for today's character hardened book fan, someone who goes with the times and today's epidemic of criminality.
