This short story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a story of the battle of wits of a seasoned detective with an equally witty young woman. In Serpentine Avenue, a busy street in London, the place where Sherlock Holmes was challenged by Ms. Irene Adler, a retired Prima donna.


 


Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein, and hereditary King of Bohemia, to be engaged to Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meiningen, second daughter of the King of Scandinavia, employs Holmes services to recover a photograph of him and Ms. Adler, who threatens to exposed their past relationship to his fiancee’, a revenged of a woman who feels scorned.


 


Our sleuth agrees to help and save the troubled king from the impending scandal. Disguises as a groom to find out everything significant about Ms. Adler, come across with Mr. Godfrey Norton, a lawyer and frequent visitor of Ms. Adler. Where he finds himself in a strangest situation. Cleverly executed a plan, with the help of Dr. Watson, his trusted friend, to trick Ms. Adler into disclosing the hiding place of the photograph.


 


The next morning, Holmes and Dr. Watson with the king this time, go back to the place of Ms. Adler. He is so confident to end the case but suffer a great humiliation of his life, instead.


 


 


If you don’t have much time to read and you love some fun this one is perfect for you. A girl power in 19th century cleverly done by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his superb storytelling prowess will make you smile at the end of the story.
