German Dictionary

Book Review by: SM THOMPSON

Original Author: Valerie Grundy/Editor
A sideways look at Dictionaries and it is useful to feature the Germany Mini School small edition
publishers Oxford
Mini School Group and trialled and tested in schools:
Its objective is to build confidence when learning a new language and special attention has been paid to making the dictionary as user-friendly as possible. It is well signposted and includes a colour banding:
HEADWORD: is a description of how the dictionary works: and includes headings as follows:
Translations: part of speech:signpost:
there follows on with a diagrammatical page outlining the best way to start off using this bi lingual dictionary:
to use an example as follows:
BURO (German) means in translation - /das/ office:
Its fairly straightforward from this point onwards.
Then to apply the use and logic of this bi lingual dictionary there is another example as follows:
PLUG (English) -noun /electrical/ - means: in (German)Stecker der:
Again another important point I ought to mention is
/The German Spelling Reform/ was adopted in 1996 and agreed Old and new spellings in this instance would be acceptable until 2005.
Some examples of this line of enquiry are as follows:
for example, after a short vowel /ss/ is used instead of /B/ daB becomes /dass/ and SchloB becomes Schloss
and other examples are quoted in this mini German Dictionary for the reader to pursue.
However I wish to draw your attention to: the symbol depicted by TRIANGLE signals new spellings used in this dictionary/German/
My favourite example is : AKZENT 1: accent: mit starkem Akzent
I have never met a country quite like the UK with the obsession of accent/how one speaks not the content of one's speech I hasten to add! It is amusing to create this inclusion of€CENT! In England this is a subject for discussion in Conversation Club : is hardly suprising I refer to myself as
President of the Turkish Poetry Club but then read on ... I will have to include German Poetry Club and let you enjoy the rest of this magnificent translation exercise ...
