The Wonder That Was India:Volume 1

Book Summary by: ashishdimri

Original Author: AL Basham
The Wonder That Was India :Volume 1
                        AL Basham

India is the largest
democracy of this world.
But, it also carries a very rich historical heritage.
It is not a land of snake charmers , monks and rajahs but a very progressive civilization that has always given a very stiff competition to other civilizations. Any wonder, it was called ‘swarna-bhumi ‘ ( golden land) in ancient texts as it was renowned for its natural treasure.
Alas, it was regularly plundered by invaders who later became besotted with its beauty. For example, Greeks under Alexander the great came but decided to stay here. Then came militia from central Asia but again they fell in love with this land and decided to make it home.
It is perhaps the only nation, where one can find unity in diversity. For example, if one compares desert areas of Rajasthan with back waters of Kerala, then one may find no similarity. Same could be said about Himalayas of Uttarakhand and plains of Punjab.
This comprehensive book on great culture by Prof. AL Basham was published in 1954. Unlike others, Prof. Basham has done a deep research on each aspect of Indian logic, religion and culture.
He throws light on historical and sociological aspects of certain social customs.
It is important to remember that Prof. Basham had served as a professor at the school of oriental and African studies at the University of London.  This book is often refered by many international opinion makers to study complex south asian society.
This book by a distinguished Indophile is a treat for every one who loves east.
