The Stories of English

Book Review by: coolgal

Original Author: David Crystal
Cited by Crystal:
How did a language originally spoken by a few thousand Anglo-Saxons become one used by more than 1500
million people? How have all the different versions of English evolved and changed? In this compelling global tour, Crystal turns the history of the language on its head and tells the real stories of English that have never before been fully told.
This book started off with stories about the origins of Old English and dialects arose during the Vikings and Celtic period. It also provides detailed explanation about the old English's grammar. Then it travels to Middle English, the lexical during that period of time. Next, it mentions about the period of early Modern English. It takes you through the last part about Contemporary English. One interesting about this book is it does not bored you off with literature but brings stories into life!
Moreover, David Crystal is a well-known linguist of the century and was awarded the OBE for services to the English language. He has published over ninety books, all about English language and English Linguistics.
