Paul J. Reuter was born in 1816 at Cassel in Germany. Due
to his father’s early death, Paul had to earn his own
bread. He got a job in his uncle's bank in Gottingen,
influenced by the scientists, Reuter’s interest went
towards the telegraphy.
His interest later diverted towards news reporting and
bought pigeons. He took a businessman along with him
who knew all about the share market. Reuter used these
pigeons to exchange News from this businessman who
worked at the Brussels stock exchange. He and his wife
then accumulated this news and
sold it, 3 hours before the local mail came.
Hearing of the importance of London in the world stock
market as well as various other aspects ,Reuter decided
to shift to London .He sold all his property and left
for London along with his wife.
In his London office ,Paul, appointed a boy named John
Griffiths In this office(in London) came a businessman
who was the first person to visit their office in
London.
Reuter soon became popular in the entire London His
business, by now, had spread all over the globe .He
appointed people whom he sent abroad for collection of
news .His people were spread not only in European
Countries of Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna but also
towards India and the Suez .Now he not only collected
stock news but also local news of various
Countries .For one month in 1858,he sent a copy of his
foreign telegram along with the local newspaper and
left to the people , if they wanted to subscribe on
not....
Nepoleon Bonepart was to give a speech in the French
parliament. Reuter managed to get a sealed copy of the
speech ,but had to assure the French that he won’t open
the seal until the speech was started.
As soon as it started Reuter telegramed it to London
through cables .
And his popularity reached a new level…….
By now a number of people had subscribed to the news
papers given by Reuter.
At this time the American civil war broke out. His
reporters at New York gave him the full report of the
incidents……
Reuter's business was expanding, it required far more
money than Reuter could supply so the company's
shares were sold to meet with the requirements.
Reuter retired in 1878 .His son became the new chairman.
Reuter was given the title of baron by the duke of Saxe-
Coburg-Gotha.
Baron Julius-de- Reuter died in 1899, giving the world
the concept of News.
As of now, distribution of news has been undertaken to
various agencies .The people working in these agencies
are spread all over the world who witness/report the
news at their fastest by the means of wireless etc..
B.B.C, British United Press (B.U.P) are two such
agencies.
