This book was written in 1934 and has undoubtedly influenced may writers in Mexico at least. In this book Mexican
culture is examined and whoever knows something of this culture knows of its complexity. The author`s thesis
tells us that our culture comes from another one, obviously because of being a country conquered by Spaniards makes that Mexicans try to imitate European culture, more in a philosophical or spiritual way than practical, this
imitation is a burden tha makes the mestizo
man to
feel inferior, but it is not only this, there is also the recurrent political system in Mexico. The foreign imitation diminishes the creative capacity of man, and the author tells us that it is
partly because of our ancestors, but I think it would be better to accept a past that has great value, but could not be developed due to the presence of another race. Mexicans admire France and this can be seen at present in their literary work and their arquitecture. The thesis tells us that one part of the inferiority complex is that excessive search for power and partly also because obviously they feel little by the side of others, on the other hand there is a social class which in the book is called "pelado" which is already part of the culture in the country, he is a person who speaks loudly and who wants the world to know he is brave and superior but who lives among shadows. Mexicans
live today and tomorrow but the future does not worry them much, Mexicans live the day to day, to be more precise, all this feeling is a result of not wanting to live a sincere life, sincere with their past, but already in some circles Mexicans are aware of this emptiness and are looking for a path for their life. This book is not only a criticism since it looks for the sincerity of the people not only with themselves but also with others, to try to stop imitation and search for a national identity. I do not thinks that Mexico is the only one in the exposed circumstance, certainly many other countries can be reflected in this text.
