This is an excellent book by the author of "The Indian In The Cupboard" that does away with the traditional cutesy fairy stereotype to tell a story of bravery and defiance in the face of tyranny. Tiki, the fairy, defies her queen to help fulfill a human's desire for a baby despite being expressly forbidden to use magic to help people. Everything goes well until the queen's inevitable intervention. Reid Banks has depicted a truly terrifying tyrant in the queen, very far removed from the saccharine fairy queens depicted in most stories. Her prose is rivetting and the ending uplifting. Suitable for children over eight, as long as they don't have a wasp phobia.
