A Walk on the nightside

John Taylor finds things, whether they want to be found or not, it’s his gift. Or perhaps, his curse. A struggling detective, down-and-out in London, barely able to make ends meet, Taylor used to be somebody, problem is, he didn’t always like the somebody he was. That was five years ago, in the underground world of the nightside. Anything is possible, in the nightside, most of it dark, evil and dangerous. One day, five years ago that danger finally caught up with Taylor and, with a bullet in his back put there by one of his few friends, he ran from it all, swearing never to return, into the ‘real’ world. Now, years later a case has him heading back into a world he thought he’d left behind for good, back into the Nightside. The case started out like so many other’s: a beautiful blonde, the promise of  a lot of money and a missing person. No clues except for the whispered words hinting at a runaway leaving London and, through secret passages and ancient rites, entering the nightside, a place that only John Taylor may be able to guide the uninitiated through safely. Or, at least, as safely as anyone can travel in that dark underground world.
So, against all better judgment, our hero returns to old friends and old enemies (some of whom are the same person) with his latest client in tow. There he faces down gods, demons and creatures of myth in his quest to never let down a client, the one standard he still holds himself to.
He succeeds, as he always does, but success fails to bring the rewards he expected, rather it brings the knowledge that, as many have said before, the nightside is his home. People like John Taylor just don’t belong in the real world. So, with a new assistant, rescued from a house that wanted to eat her, and a new lease on an old life Taylor, once again, sets up shop in perhaps the most dangerous place on earth, the nightside.
His name and reputation earn him a valuable place amongst those who need his services and he soon finds himself facing armies of angels (from above and below), demons older than time and, perhaps the most disturbing of all, rumours that his non-human mother might just be the most dreadful force this world, or any other, has ever seen. Will his quest to find his mother and answer his questions about who he really is lead to his destruction and perhaps that of the nightside itself, the only home he has ever truly known?
That is one question to which not even John Taylor can find the answer.
