Eragon Book Review

We've got magic, we've got dragons, and--that's right--we've even got the horrid cliches that reign across the land.

Consider the following: A Wise Old Mentor who happens to knows a lot but doesn't give information to our main character willingly; Eragon who doesn't know anything about using real swords or magic, yet learns to be advanced in them within hours; the Evil Villain in dark clothes that sends others to do the dirty work for him; the Shade who happens to be so powerful that he creates henchmen and fails at eliminating Eragon more often than not.

Would you want to read something like this?

For me, this was a tragic piece. There's nothing realistic about it half the time, and yes, I know it's fantasy, people, but good lord, there needs to be some proof to reality. Why would an old man be able to run as fast as the young Eragon without running short of breathing, limping, or straggling behind? There's no reason to be found. If you were the Shade and had Eragon right where you wanted him, would you dawdle about, shaking your bum at your captured company? No. Eragon would be dead. But the villain is Stupid. So while he taunts Eragon, Saphira busts in and saves the boy from a would-be death. Unbelievable.

For a person who knows nothing about using swords properly, I find it odd how he learns to wield such a thing within such a short time span. After all, if you ask someone else who's involved with swords, I'm sure they'd tell you it took them years to develop the skills that they have. Eragon's Special. Heaven forbid he has to actually work to learn something. Same goes for the magic.

All in all, it had good potential, but due to all the flaws and cliches a certain author decided to put in, it came out in a ruinous heap. Maybe one day this will be fixed. Maybe.
