The Fortuneteller is the story of Vilela, Camilo and Rita. They are involved in a love triangle. The story begins on a Friday, november, 1869 with a conversation between  Camilo and Rita. Camilo does not believe in the fortuneteller and doubts in an ironic way. The fortuneteller in this tale is a quack, she is one of these people who tells what suits to everybody. A sinister character, in despite of we do not know her name ( caracteristic of Machado de Assis), she stands out for deceiving the main characters. Rita believes the fortuneteller can solve all her problems and anguish. Camilo, almost at the end of the story, when he is close to have his affair with Rita discovered, at the peak of his despair, he asks to the same fortuneteller. She also deceives him as she does with all her clients, including Rita. The dishonest  woman says effect sentences and metaphors to look like a wise. Camilo becomes confident after his visit to the woman and when re arrives at Vilela''s apartment he finds Rita dead. He is murdered by his old friend of boyhood days who had known about his wife betrayl and was waiting for him with a gun at hand.
