This book tells about a parable of four characters namely two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two small people Hem and Haw. In order to survive they have to find cheese through the maze. Sniff and Scurry being mouse has a keen sense of smell. They use a simple method of sniffing out the direction of the cheese which usually Sniff is in charge of, while Scurry runs toward the direction and checking out the exact location. With the small people their strategy is using their logic to find cheese. Eventually all of them were lead to section C of the maze where they found large amounts of cheese. Every morning they would race towards Section C to enjoy cheese. Before long, Hem and Haw built their home near Section C thinking that they are already secured due to enormous supply of cheese. They have no idea on how the cheese came from but they are content that there is a supply of cheese every morning.
One Morning they woke up and all the cheeses are gone. When Snuff and Scurry found no cheese they started off sniffing to the maze looking for new cheese, while Hem and Haw got angry. After the next few days there is still no cheese. They spent a long time deciding what to do. While the little people stayed and kept analysing their situation on sector C. Days passed when eventually Haw made up his mind to go find other Section for cheese while Hem is still thinking about the injustice that happened to them. Alone and weak from hunger , Ham thought to himself why he never thought of looking for new cheese sooner. Inside the maze he realize his principles changed and he wrote it on the wall hoping that Hem would follow. After alot of dissapointment Haw finally found his old friends Snuff and Scurry with stuffed big belly in Section H where new cheese are found. Later on the story, Hem eventually came.
This book also contains alot of quotations of what Haw learned in the maze and also stories of how other peoples'' lives are changed just by reading this book.
