Title: Soul Connexion
Author: Janet Allen
You could be forgiven for doing a doubletake at first glance at the book - Soul Connexion.
In fact you could even be forgiven for thinking it's the coolest looking 'notebook' you had seen in a while. Really.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing , because, if it's meant to appeal to a fast-paced, easily bored Generation X' as it says, then it does need a stop-you-in-your -tracks approach.
Soul Connexion, (volume 1) is an 80-page Christian devotional complete with 2008 calendar and glossary of terms and phrases used in the material.
It is designed as a compact slim line mobile telephone - keypads, screen and all and should fit neatly into any backpack, or pencil case, man bag, slim jeans or uniform pocket .
Palm it for the walk home, or walk with it to cafeteria, its that kinda book.
Following on the theme of a phone chat , and Jamaicans' knack for coining a word or 'talk' to suit every situation, the book is very up on street (and phone) slang,.
Young persons will enjoy its easy read format, and engaging themes.
Readers are pulled into quick reasonings on topics like the 'hottie-hottie' scenario, the fashion and social scene and the intrigue of interpersonal relationships including , yes, sex.
But what else did you expect with section headings like - 'Sen On', 'Up to di time', Tuck in yuh belly', 'Ansa di call' , and Money O'?
Certainly not your standard inspirational read.
The format is simple - for bite sized Scripture verses there is 'Redial ', a relevant prayer alongside every reading is 'Call conference', while 'Top Up' is an invitation to join the discussion segment or enjoy an inspirational poem.
Simple editing flaws (like the occasional inconsistent text size, or that the book is numbered by chapters only), distract a bit from the work. Soul Connexion assumes too that its readers are all familiar with Bible-speak , (what is Dunamas power?)
That aside Soul Connexion should well ...connect with you.
