Living by Your Brush Alone

Book Review by: CatherineGallagher

Original Author: Edna Wagner Piersol
A step-by-step approach to making painting a successful full-time career.
This book is about making a life -- and a
living -- for yourself as an artist. If you're sick to death of boring, non-creative daytime jobs, or even creative daytime jobs which leave you too drained to do your own creative work, you may be ready to take the ultimate move for your life, and become a full-time professional artist. There are stories of, and interviews with, several artist who have found ways to live, as artists, in this book.
It addresses various ways of selling your art (as well as such business details as record-keeping, taxes, deductions, and legal forms and responsibilities). It also covers various sources of income and ways to approach and use these. The author has included such topics as galleries, juried and non-juried art shows, museums, and even starting your own art gallery.
There are many suggestions, such as bartering artwork for everything from veterinary bills to cars, food to housing, and more. The author is very inspirational and encouraging, and the book is well worth the price, and more, even if you are not quite ready to go full-time. Many books cover artistic techniques and materials; very few cover the business end of art, trusting artists to magically find patrons and customer. This book takes the artist seriously, and the art seriously, with fun, yet realistically.
