It’s important to point out the great difference excisting between understanding and learning the way to use for example
English language. There’s new methods that make the traditional die hard.
In spite of this a lot of people, all over the world, still learn and teach with old methods because
teachers are closed to the way themselves learnt.
The student doesn’t need to know about the history of the language, he must be enable to use it. He has to learn not only a set of rules and a large vocabulary but how to use them, because it’s nonsense to know all about grammar and don’t have a good performance when he writes or speaks in the new language in order to be proficiency at the hour to use it, othewise everything can be a wate of time.
The unit of the language isnt’s the word but the sentence specially in English where there’s a difference between
structural words and lexical item. The use of personal pronouns are structural so defined, and part of the grammatical system, nouns are lexical items and not part of grammatical system.
Teacher’s aim must be to carry the student above the language ceiling in order to enable him to be capable of learning in the best way. Actually he’s encouraged to make mistakes, every time trained to learn making a few mistakes as his possibility and to perform unknown skills. If he’s feeling incapable to going on, teachers has to go back and fix certain rules that were not understood or incorrectly learnt.
