Eyes are the mirrors of the soul, goes the old adage. But a new generation of experts avers that a
person’s
handwriting reflects the soul even better.
Graphology, the
study of handwriting, is so accurate that they call it brainwriting.
Chinese scholars of yore knew that the way a person writes
reveals much about his character and state of mind.
The term graphology was coined sometime in the 1870’s to define the study of handwriting. It determines the
personality of a person by studying how he dots the ‘i’s and crosses the ‘t’s among other handwriting pecularities such as strokes and patterns. Graphology got a boost after psychology emerged as a major branch of science.
One of the foremost practitioners of graphology in India is Rafiullah Baig, the first certified handwriting analyst in India.
Baig reveals a cache of facts about this fascinating field, and how it has helped many people to alter their lives by just changing their handwriting.
The patterns in handwriting are the result of an unconscious action, and each stroke reveals a specific personality trait. The stroke of the ‘T’ reveals self-esteem, the dot on the letter ‘i’ indicates concentration levels and the slant of the alphabet shows emotional responsiveness. Once one is aware of these nuances of handwriting, one begins to tidy up the handwriting, and this goes back to the mind.
Baig suggests that the nuances of the handwriting not only enables a trained graphologist to study human behaviour but also helps extract vital information in forgery and criminal cases.
An analysis of the handwriting helps counsellors and recruitment agencies, and even people trying to make the right choice of career.
Graphologists claim an accuracy of about 85 to 90 per cent. This, they say, is more accurate than any other personality assessment tool. But the study of the handwriting often fails to reveal traits like the person’s age, race, gender, religion and nationality.
Baig cites a recent incident that gave him a sense of satisfaction. He was asked to analyse a woman’s handwriting by her husband but she herself seemed uninterested. A couple of days later she called up to thank him: She had changed her mind about committing suicide after hearing him.
Baig runs the first graphology school here, the Handwriting
Institute of India, which is affiliated to the Handwriting University International, USA. The institute offers courses in three levels, the first two being the basics and introduction followed by the certification course.
