Hearts and Minds

Book Review by: BHTrans

Original Author: Jay Taverner
Lucy Weaver is half black in the white world of the early 1700's in England.  People stare at her and look
down oh her.  Although her mother, Bet says that her father was an African Prince she finds it very hard to believe as she spends her days picking up and delivering people's dirty laundry for her mother to wash.  Even then her mother still has to resort to keeping the town's men "happy" on the side to try and make end's meet.
Lucy's life changes drastically, however when one of Bet's clients decides that his wife died because Bet put her evil eye on her. Tempers are high and following a series of tragic events Lucy finds herself motherless and pregnant to her mother's killer.  Alone and frightened Lucy somehow find's her way to Hope Bishop and Isabella Wiston's cottage in the forest.
20 years have passed since Hope and Isabella came to the cottage in Jay Taverner's previous book, "Rebellion".  Fate has just brought Isabella and her brother Alistair back together for the first time in 20 years and Isabella is away visiting her brother when Lucy arrives into Hope's life. Hope takes Lucy in in her time of need.Living with Hope, Lucy meets the quiet and mysteries Bron. Meanwhile Isabella, while missing Hope is also enjoying the company of Richard a friend of her brother's. As Richard and Isabella's relationship grows closer,  Lucy and Hope also grow closer but life is about to become more complicated. Lucy's past catches up with her with startling and wide spread consequences.
Jay Taverner has succeeded in creating another real to life, exciting, romantic historical novel with satifyingly believable characters who are not perfect and who don't always make the right decisions but are lovable.  I was sad to get to the end of this book.  This is what historical romances should be.
