Loss of Innocence is a wonderfully written creation that weaves history and fiction together seamlessly to tell the story
of the French
Revolution. The main character, Comtesse de Beaumont, Eugenie Devereux is a fictional character living in the Bordeaux valley. Eugenie is an extremely strong woman who agrees with the ideals behind the revolution. Be that as it may, she also believes that the transition need not be violent. The story of this unique woman actually starts with the death of Marie Antoinette. Later the reader finds out that Eugenie had played a large part in trying to save the Queen’s life after the execution of the king, Louis XVI. The story relates to the reader how this came to pass. The character of Eugenie Devereux was so well created that for the first few chapters, I actually wondered if this fictional character was based upon a real woman. In part, this is due to the attention to details, the addition of interesting bits of
historical information into the work, and purposeful attempts to dismiss commonly held beliefs about this period of time. I applaud the author- very well done.
