REVIEW FOR SKYE O''MALLEY - Historical
Romance Novel
Who is Skye O''Malley?
Skye O''Malley is the youngest of seven daughters born to an infamous Irish pirate in the mid-1500s. As she is quite different from her elder sisters, Skye earns a special place in her father''s heart, as well as a place of command on his pirate vessels. Her unique upbringing at sea fosters a headstrong personality unseen in women of the time. This engaging first book of the saga follows Skye O''Malley from birth to Queen Elizabeth''s court and many other exotic countries as the heroine grows from mischievous girl to sensuous women.
The detail with which Bertrice Small pens the actions of her characters lends a particular sense of reality. She shares with the reader every facet of elaborate wardrobes, elegant meals and interior design of castles, ships, and palaces without the feeling of dictionary description. Small is brilliant in the way she relates explicit erotic scenes throughout the novel. The Virgin Queen would no longer be able to stake claim to that title if she had been allowed access to this thrilling novel by Bertrice Small.
Bertrice Small does an excellent job of portraying private and public life in Elizabethan England during the queen''s reign. She keenly offers a detailed and historically accurate picture of key characters who actually lived and dominated 16th century England. The author provides unending
adventure while remaining true to historical events. Piracy, romance, revenge, deceipt, births, deaths,
religion, wealth and
power all play major themes in this tale of a beautiful Irish-born pirate''s rise to personnal and political greatness.
Skye O''Malley''s outspoken and rebellious manners set her in a personal war with the Queen of England...A war that either women would risk anything to win for herself. Small carries the characters all over the globe fighting this battle and living out the consequences for rash behaviors. This journey introduces the reader to a bevy of colorful places, such as Ireland, Algiers, and England, and to people who seem real enough to touch. Some of the more reknowned characters include Elizabeth Tudor, her advisor William Cecil,
King Phillip, and Queen Isabella. The author also explains the workings of notorious sadists, skilled concubines, terrifying Jannisary warriors, Catholic nuns and priests,
Even with its strong political overtones, the novel is froth with love found, love lost, love unrequited and the hope for love everlasting. Small''s writing leaves one yearning for the next book in the series...a yearning which Small gladly obliges with the following sequels and prequels in the saga of Sky O''Malley.
