Wolf of the Plains

Book Review by: communityfriend

Original Author: Conn Iggulden
From the author of the Emperor series and co-author or The Dangerous Book for Boys comes Wolf of the Plains. Wolf of the
Plains is the first of the Conqueror series of books and deals
with the beginnings of the live of Temujin who one day will become Genghis Khan. After the
Khan of the Wolfs is murdered a power struggle to become the Khan of the Wolfs ensues
which ends up with Temujin (aged 11), his mother, 4 brothers and a daughter cast out of the tribe. We follow Temujin as he hardens and pulls his family together to survive the first winter before he can take his revenge against those that cast his family out.
From the opening pages of this book you get a feel of the Mongolian tribes and the harsh conditions that they live in. The reader follows the tribe with all its customs and smells
through their ger''''s and into their neighbouring tribes. The pace never lets up and you really
start to feel that you want Temujin to strike back and take what is rightfully his and his family.
He sets out to pull the wanderers of the plains together before making a name for himself by striking fear into the neighbouring Tartars that his small band of warriors are attacking. The
Wolfs are never far from his mind and are always a constant threat to his and his family''''s lives.
Conn Iggulden has thoroughly researched this book and at the end there is a short piece
about the facts in the books and some of the liberties that he has taken - including a couple
of name changes to make it easier for the reader. I for one will be looking forward to the next
in the Conqueror series but to ease the passing I have just picked up the first in his Emperor series. I''''d recommend Wolf of the Plains to everyone!
