Sons & Lovers
TYBA English Literature’s impressive study material included this famous piece
of work by D. H. Lawrence. Its extensive psychology narration attracted quite a lot of nods from us students but on the other hand it bored us.
With a story line so inspired by human psychology, D. H. Lawrence marked his place in the world’s most popular books and also a tag of a Classic Literary work and a must read for all book lovers. This is a story of a miner’s family through the rough times and especially that of the relationship of the members with each other. The matriarch whose love for her sons and a deep down hatred for her husband provokes the story of Sons & Lovers.
The central character, Paul Morel, was and still is considered to be an autobiographical phase of Lawrence himself. The book revolves around the phase of his mother’s illness and his love for her through his troubled childhood. Many interpretations of the female protagonist Gertrude Morel as Lawrence’s mother have been sought from the past of the author.
Sons & Lovers is considered to be not only a novel but also Lawrence’s autobiography which shows the psychology of the relation he shared with his mother. It definitely is a must read but also because of the many interpretations have made it more controversial than a popular read. A less Literary work of art and more of a Psychological quest of reasoning. D. H. Lawrence is a must read for all those who like seeing a story their way with a completely new interpretation for themselves as the different characters relate to many of the human-kind’s diverse roles in life.
