The Mermaid in the Basement

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: Gilbert Morris
It was a night that Clive Newton would later regret. His mind was dulled by alcohol, his heart filled with passion for a
beautiful but cold-hearted woman who would never love him back. Clive staggered backstage and pushed through the crowd of actors from the local production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Foolishly he proposed to Katherine Fairfield, but the star of the show laughed in his face. Drunk and embarrassed, Clive demanded his ring back and threatened to kill her. The next day Kate was found murdered in her bedroom! Clive will hang for the crime…unless his older sister Lady Serafina Trent can find prove that her brother is innocent.
Serafina teams up with one of the actors from the play, Dylan Tremayne, a handsome man with a criminal past who has found faith in God. While Dylan shares his beliefs with everyone he meets, Serafina is a skeptic who believes only in scientific facts. Fact #1: Katherine Fairfield used men like toys. Fact #2: many members of the cast actually despised Kate, including a jealous actress whose husband had a crush on Kate, her understudy who hated to stand in Kate’s shadow - even the producer of the play had a motive. The author includes intriguing subplots, such Serafina’s mysteriously tragic marriage to the late Viscount Charles Trent. Author Morris also takes advantage of this historical setting by including some famous names. For instance, at a high society party, Lady Trent dines with Charles Dickens, Florence Nightingale, and Charles Darwin!
The unusual title of this book is part of the key that unlocks the whole mystery. It is the first in a trilogy which includes A Conspiracy of Ravens (Book #2) and Sonnet to a Dead Contessa (Book #3). If you’re a history fan, mystery lover, or enjoy Christian fiction, then I highly recommend The Mermaid in the Basement.
