The 19th century English poet and clergyman john burgon extolled petra, in southern jorden, as 'a rose-red city', half as old as time.' Concealed within a ring of hills in the desert, the city can be reached only on foot or, more commanly, on horseback through a dark and narrow gorge known as the Sig. Inside, magnificent facades of temples, tombs and other buildings are carved into the sendstone cliffs. Most spectacular of them is Khazneh Firaoun.
