How can a benevolent God exist when there is so much evil in the world?
Why do men so readily gravitate toward evil?
What is the
purpose of our
existence? These questions have echoed from human speech throughout
history. In the book of Genesis, they are answered. Far more than a
collection of stories, Genesis includes the foundational prophesies
regarding the coming of Jesus Christ, his purpose in restoring the
human race from their fallen state, and the destruction of Satan in the
end times. It is here that we learn that the evil in mankind is a
result of an early rebellion against God, and all "sin" is just that.
Genesis outlines the original intent of creation, the fall of man
through Adam and Eve, and God's plan to restore His creatures. The rest
of the book outlines the method in which God plans to accomplish that
task--through a coming Messiah and through the
nation of Israel. God
establishes a covenant with Abraham, promising to create through him a
great nation. God promises universal blessing to all the nations of the
world through Abraham's seed. He establishes His chosen people, the
Jews, the nation of Israel.
While Genesis provides a detailed account of the creation of the world,
the fall of man, the beginnings of human civilization, and the
beginnings of God's nation Israel--the book is more than simply a
historical documentary. Genesis describes in detail the hopeless
spiritual state of man before God, and his need for a Savior. Every
event in the Bible finds it's foundation here, including the life,
death and resurrection of Jesus Christ--prophesied here and fulfilled
thousands of years later.
