EVE''S DIARY

Book Review by: CatherineGallagher

Original Author: Mark Twain (pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens)
This is a charming little book, quite unlike some of the more cynical accounts of the story of Adam and Eve. It is filled
with charming little drawings of Adam, Eve, the Garden of Eden, and of life after the Fall. They are black and white, line drawings for the most part, yet lend an air of beauty and authenticity to the work that might otherwise be lacking. The story begins with Eve''s diary, progresses to Adam''s diary, returns to Eve''s point of view after the Fall, and at the end, with a picture of an old Adam mourning at Eve''s grave. It is touchingly naive, written with a near-perfect understanding of what INNOCENCE really means. Adam is a more practical, intellectual sort of person; Eve is one who is totally naive and in love with beauty, finding beauty in everything in some measure. Everything is at peace with each other; even the tigers eat strawberries, cuddle with Eve and are ridden by Adam. It is such a beautiful picture of the world. One can only hope it will be like this at the true Millenium, when the lion, it is foretold, shall lie down with the lamb.
