A summary of an account in the Bible, the New Testament, in the book of Matthew, chapter 9,
verses 18-26.
This
man has
faith in Jesus’ power over life and death. Verses 18-19
The professional mourners are already in the house.
He has heard about Jesus – that Jesus was here in his own town!
The man is desperate with grief.
We don’t know why he hadn’t come to Jesus before this, but now – he has a last chance.
God often uses grief and desperation to bring us to Himself.
When we are at the end of our rope we no longer care about what others will think or say.
(So Jesus went with him.)
Now we have a story within the story - Just to touch His robe. Verses 20-22
The book of Mark in the Bible, chapter 5, and verse 26 says – “and had
endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not
helped at all, but rather had grown worse.”
I know people like that spiritually – they have endured much at the hands of many religionists, spent all they had, and were not helped at all, but instead are
worse off.
“Follow my 10 step program;” “ attend our
healing group;” “ give your money and God will multiply it back to you …”
Here is what she believed about Jesus - “If I can just touch His cloak, I don’t need any special attention. Just to be near Him is enough.”
But Jesus does give her special attention. In verse 22 - Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.
Now Jesus arrives at the home of the man - They laughed at Him. Verses 23-26
Jesus perspective on death was not the same as theirs.
They believed it was the end. One group of religious leaders, the Sadducees, taught there was no resurrection.
But Jesus tells them, “She is sleeping.” He sees both sides.
Death is like a little child going to sleep as daddy drives the car through the night, and waking up in the morning she opens her eyes to see she is at home. The girl’s father was right about Jesus - he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
