Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: Judy Blume
Life is confusing enough for pre-teenager Margaret Ann Simon. She must try to fit in as “the new girl at school” when her
family moves from New York City to New Jersey. She wonders if she’ll be the last girl in 6th grade to buy a training bra or get her period. And she’s got a crush on the Phillip, the cutest boy in school.
"Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret. I’m more confused than ever…”

But poor Margaret has even bigger issues besides playing practical jokes on her new teacher. Margaret is caught in the middle of her family’s religious tug-of-war. Her paternal grandmother, Sylvia, is Jewish and hopes that one day Margaret will choose her faith (but tries not to pressure her). Her grandparents on her mother’s side, however, insist that Margaret was “born” a Christian and are terribly upset that Margaret and her parents don’t attend church. Margaret’s parents eloped to get away from the whole spiritual mess and refuse to go to any type of church at all. So what does Margaret do? She tries to “find” God on her own by attending different places of worship with her new friends. She goes to a Presbyterian church, then a Jewish temple on Rosh Hashanah - even a Catholic confessional. But she leaves each place even more confused about religion than ever.

“Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret. I’ve been looking for you God. But you weren’t there. Why do I only feel you when I’m alone?”
