Jaclyn and her Aunt Greta moved from the bustling city of Chicago to a tiny Arctic village called Sherpia. The village seemed
oddly deserted, except for two neighborhood kids, Eli and his sister Rolonda.
“Being scared is about all there is to do in Sherpia,” Eli told Jaclyn. She thought it was a strange thing to say...almost as strange as the creepy snowman built in every front yard. Each one had a frosty sneer, coal black eyes, and a scar down the side of its snowy head. Eli told her the snowmen were built for protection against the living Snowman monster that stayed in the ice cave at the top of the mountain.
“Never go to the top of the mountain,” the other kids warned Jaclyn. They swore that if the evil Snowman didn’t get you, then Conrad, the weird mountain man with the pet wolf would. Ridiculous! Jaclyn thought. The whole story was just silly village
superstition. She was determined to go up the mountain and solve this mystery. Unfortunately the answers she uncovered would give her the shock of her life!
This book is part of the bestselling
Goosebumps series by master storyteller R. L. Stine. I found
Beware the Snowman! not quite as terrifying as some of his other
Goosebumps books, but the ending has several unexpected twists that will keep the reader guessing! The
Goosebumps series is #16 on the American Library Association’s list of 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books from 1990 – 2000 because some parents think they are too frightening for children. The Reading Level for these books is ages 9 – 12, however some of my own students in that age group refused to read them. I had no such problem, of course. But I kept the lights on as I read it – just in case!
