This is a beautiful (and hilarious) book of
cartoons, a selection of comic
strips from the very first one that
Jim Davis ever published, up to some of his latest ones, decade by decade. There are comments on the
development of the comic strip, and of the characters, through the years. It gives a brief series of comments that reveal how he put the strip out, and how he eventually syndicated it. He also mentions the
development of PAWS, Inc., his merchandising (etc.) company. But these are very brief and easy to miss, as they are kind of sidebars at various places on the pages and pages of reproduced comic strips. At the end of the book, Jim Davies shows his own 30 favorite comic strips of all time.
This is a fabulous book. I laughed myself silly, and saw a lot of great strips that I had never seen before. I came out loving Garfield even more than before -- and I didn't think that that was possible. I
recommend it highly.
