Direction: CEO’s, entrepreneurs,
managers etc. can influence the
business world towards the formation of a positive network of global alliances, leading to the Trillion-dollar Enterprise.
Caution: The Trillion-dollar
Enterprise can raise serious issues of national sovereignty, antitrust, commercial globalization, concentration of economic power etc. which must be guarded against.
Essence: The book explores the evolution of the Trillion
dollar Enterprise, a network of
alliances functioning as a single company, controlling two-thirds of the global market in their respective industries.
The Trillion Dollar Enterprise will be a natural response to two primary forces that will dominate the 2000’s - Globalization and Nationalism. Mergers and acquisitions will be replaced by enterprises/alliances that will be both
global in outlook, in markets, in sourcing, in technology, culture and people; as well as
local, tapping into local talent, resources and funding. Such an enterprise will be a “relationship enterprise”. With more consolidation through the network of alliances, the focus and size will increase, creating what will be known as the Trillion Dollar Enterprise, huge and powerful alliances, capable of moving economies & changing the entire business landscape of the world.
This evolution will follow a 3-stage process:
1. Single-purpose alliances - Companies, realizing their insufficiency, will create linkages with other companies to bridge traditional geographic and value-added boundaries.
2. Network of partners - Companies will realize the opportunities that broader and deeper involvement with their partners might offer.
3. Multiple partners acting in concert, the Trillion-dollar Enterprise - The partners will recognize their potential power and begin to act together as a single company. This new form of economic concentration will capture the best capabilities of the partners, yet avoid the bureaucratic disadvantages of size.
Cyrus Freidheim identifies the key elements of successful Trillion-dollar Alliances’ (TDA) formation and lays down the new roles and responsibilities of CEO’s, entrepreneurs, and managers in the projected new world arena. Diplomacy, negotiation and the ability to guide and lead people towards a joint vision will be the skills required in the TD Alliance. In the concluding chapter the author highlights both the ‘bright’ and the ‘dark’ side of the Trillion Dollar Enterprise, and advises all to be prepared for it and utilize it for a positive future.
