his book is the first in a series of darkly comedic mystery stories by Jeff Lindsay which have been the foundation for the show DEXTER on the Showtime channel. Dexter Morgan is an interesting, fascinating and complex character. The book takes you on an inside trip through the labyrinthine mind of serial killer, who only kills people who truly deserve it. He is a blood spatter expert for the Miami, Florida (USA) police department, but has a dark shadow that drives him to kill. His foster (adoptive) father was a policeman, who taught him how and why to contain and control this dark side that made him what he was. (There is material that shows, at least allegedly, how he got that way. The author has obviously studied much material on psychology, but it is introduced, where it is, in a very unobtrusive, story-embedded way.) In this particular story, a series of killings involving the butchering of prostitutes follows a pattern that leaves Dexter wondering whether he himself has done them, perhaps while sleepwalking. And yet, that IS impossible. And yet...the dreams... He must rescue his foster sister from the clutches of this killer, who is more like himself than himself--a greater self, it seems. Or is he greater than he knows?
