When We Were Orphans

Book Review   by:HibernianScribe     Original Author: Kazuo Ishiguro
ª

Christopher Banks was educated in Shanghai with his Japanese schoolfriend Akira until his parents were abducted ostensibly in response to their campaign to halt the importation of opium to keep the Chinese drugged and easily managed by European powers.

Banks returned to Shanghai during the Japanese invasion of China and finally secured enough information to locate his mother during the 1950s.

The confused opportunistic logic of the book inolving a chance encounter with Akira during the fighting in Shanghai was not credible.

A poorly written book which does not grip the reader.
