Thr3e With more sharp turns than a winding mountain road, Ted Dekker’s suspense novel, Thr3e, takes the reader on a suspenseful ride. The first scene opens with Kevin Parsons, a 28-year-old seminary student who receives an unusual phone call on his brand new cell phone. The eerie voice on the other end called Slater says, “You have exactly three minutes to confess your sin to the world. Refuse, and the car you’re driving will blow sky high.” Then the phone goes dead. Kevin’s world is rocked when he parks his car in an abandoned parking lot and sure enough, the car explodes. This is just the beginning of a frantic-paced novel which exceeds the speed limit for most action-paced novels. The chase between two polar opposites: a sinister man who is completely evil versus a virtually innocent seminary student. The sinister man, Slater, gives riddles for Kevin to solve while threatening for terrible things if they aren’t solved. At first Kevin, in his twenties, displays a child-like innocence. An example of this is when he reveals the fact that his one and only kiss was with his childhood sweetheart when he was a young boy. Yet, Kevin’s innocent, child-like exterior begins to crumble when others around him discover his dark and sinister past. Raised by a controlling and manipulative aunt, Kevin was never allowed to live in the real world. His aunt and uncle raised him in a make-believe world where he was kept hidden away from all of the evil in the world, but he was also kept away from love.
Kevin’s only hope appears to be his childhood sweetheart, Samantha, an FBI agent, who is thrown into this suspenseful cat-and-mouse chase. Slater continues to pursue them in a never-ending race of frantic phone calls, an exploding library, an abandoned warehouse, and a childhood secret which keeps Kevin, Samantha, and Slater inextricably linked. In the midst of this struggle, Kevin finds himself inexplicably drawn to Jennifer, an FBI agent who is investigating his case. Jennifer herself finds herself magnetized by Kevin’s innocence which reminds her of her brother who was murdered. As Jennifer pursuing what she assumes is her brother’s killer, Slater, she is thrown into the frantic face to discover the true identity of Slater. Who is Slater? Is he a serial killer that Jennifer is looking for? Is he an old childhood enemy of Kevin and Samantha who is determined to seek revenge on them? Only the exciting ending will provide the answers to this truly unpredictable novel which has recently been turned into a movie.
