The Fifth Elephant

Book Review   by:PeterHorvath     Original Author: Terry Pratchett
ª

Überwald is full of different
races: vampires, werewolves, dwarfs, trolls live according to rules
they set, without serious confrontations, but things change quickly
when Sam Vimes is visiting. The Duke of Ankh-Morphok travels to
the distant country because of diplomatic reasons, but soon among
murder, theft and mystery he has to become what he truly is: a
copper. The Fifth Elephant is a part of Terry
Pratchett''s Watch saga, a novel about lies, betrayal, conspiracy, in
short: diplomacy. Our heroes finds themselves in unfamiliar settings:
Captain Carrot goes after his love, Angua in to the wild, meanwhile
Vimes, Sybil, Detritus and Cherry, the first dwarf watchwoman in
skirt represents Ankh-Morphok at the coronation of the new dwarf
King. In Überwald Vimes has to visit the three interested
faction in the coronation: the dwarfs, the vampires and the
werewolves. In the dwarf caves he''s hired to find
the “Scone of Stone”, an ancient bread, a sacred artifact and an
integral part of the coronation. Incidentally the copy of the Scone
is also stolen from a museum in Ankh-Morphok, and a rubber
manufacturer – the maker of the famous sonkies –was murdered back
home. In the following days Vimes is arrested for attempted murder by
the dwarfes, is saved by a vampire and hunted by a pack of werewolves
led by Angua''s brother Wolfgang. It''s just like every day in his
life: he has to survive the chase, find the Scone, restore order in
Überwald and must prepare for fatherhood. Ankh-Morphok faces even more serious
challenges: in the absence of both Vimes and Carrot Sergeant Colon
becomes the head of the City Watch and there are dire consequences.
He starts to terrorize the Watch, which leaves no choice to Nobby: he
has to found a union.

This is a fast paced, marvelous story,
which lives up to the high standards set by Pratchett''s previous
books. It introduces us to the Clack Towers, shows us Überwald''s
every detail and even the witches make a brief cameo appearance. A
must read for every fan.
