Once there lived a girl who was as beautiful as a rose but who was also as imperious and vicious as the thorns upon its stem. She would not tolerate any mention of other girls in her presence. If any other girl was praised as beautiful she would become as resentful and stop at nothing to mar her rival’s reputation. She claimed arrogantly: “Not even a fairy can surpass my beauty. I want all men to fall to their knees before me.” But as the years passed by, not one man showed any interest in her. She became so upset that she began to look herself in the mirror day and night, trying to find the tiniest of shortcomings in her looks. She even examined every hair on her head, which she found to be in perfect condition. Perhaps I need a fresh, bright-colored flower to decorate my hair, she thought to herself. So she went to the rose garden and prayed to the Rosy fairy for the most beautiful rose. Just as she expected, the Rosy fairy chose the loveliest bloom and presented it to her. The girl accepted it delightedly and was about to put it in her hair when she detected a stinking odour coming from the heart of the petals. She immediately threw the rose away and took a handkerchief out to cover her nose The Rose fairy reprimanded her: “What a lovely rose! How could you just throw it away?” “No one wants to wear flower with a foul smell no matter how lovely and brightly colored it is!” the beauty answered. “This is exactly the reason why no one is willing to go near a pretty with an ugly soul! “ said the Rosy fairy. ”What you need is a virtue, not a rose”
